How to Use Image Masking in Photoshop and Lightroom

-

Masking an image can help you to avoid unnecessary background blur. Most online buyers prefer images with a white background. However, this can be tricky to achieve, especially if you have a busy schedule and the subject has hair or hide. In these cases, image masking will save you time and effort. This method will also help you to create a high-quality, consistent image for your online store.
Invert Mask feature

In Lightroom, you can use the Invert Mask feature to change the background of your photo. This feature will automatically select everything but the subject, making it easy to change the background without changing the subject. This will help you achieve the desired effect quickly and easily. Lightroom has many features that make editing easy and fast.

You can also use the invert mask feature to blur a video clip. This will let you create the illusion of a transparent video. To use this feature, you must first highlight the clip that you’re going to edit. This way, you’ll be sure to only make changes to that clip.
Edge Hardness slider

Edge Hardness is the degree of hardness of the brush’s edge. A value of 100% indicates a hard edge, while zero means a feathered edge. To make adjustments, drag the slider to the right or left. Changing the hardness will change the amount of feathering the edge will have. The softness slider also contains three checkboxes: Show to reveal the mask effect you’ve just created; Invert to invert the effect; and Clear to delete the created mask.

When masking an image, it’s important to be aware of the edges of the subject. These can be tricky to mask. In these cases, the black and white channels can be helpful. You can also use the Edge Hardness slider to show in-between spaces.
Layer masking

Photoshop’s layer masking feature allows you to select a part of your image to hide while preserving the rest. It works much like putting a photograph inside a picture frame with an opening at one corner. Layer masks can be applied to any layer in Photoshop, including text layers, vector shapes, and images with a transparency channel.

Using image masking is crucial when editing photos. Brighter areas of an image require different adjustments than darker areas. This technique allows you to target areas with different tones for a more professional look.
Masking with SVGs

Masking images with SVGs is a useful technique for partially or completely hiding elements or objects in a Web page. The SVG masking element allows you to add masking to HTML elements and other SVG graphics. The masking effect works by setting the image’s opacity to a specified value. A colorful image is recommended to make the mask effect more apparent.

Masking images with SVGs is also possible with text. By adding a SVG text element inside a SVG image, you can use this technique to combine typography and images. The white RGB value creates an oval area around the masked text. Any object that lies behind the oval will be shown through the masked text.
Masking with alpha channel

Masking images in Photoshop allows users to add or remove areas of the image. An image with a mask can be used as a color mask for many purposes, including color correction and adjusting opacity. You can also use a mask to draw shapes or draw symbols on the image to mark different locations.

You can save the selection as an Alpha Channel, which means that you can use it again to select another area of the image. This feature is accessed by clicking on the Channels panel. Once you have made a selection, you can load the alpha channel into a different image and edit it.

The alpha channel is similar to a layer mask, but it can be used on any layer. In contrast, a layer mask only affects the layer on which it’s placed. If you are intimidated by the idea of using a channel, try this quick tutorial to get over your fear. Load a document that contains 2 layers. One layer contains an image, and the other contains a gradient of values ranging from 0 to 1.
